Getty Images Newspapers / Websites of the Year 2007

The work of press photographers, however remarkable, counts for little without publications that are prepared to use them well. This is recognised by the Getty Images Newspaper of the Year awards. The judges were looking for titles which demonstrated an enthusiasm for good photography both in how it is taken and how it is displayed to the reader.

For the first time this year, we presented Awards to websites which similarly display excellence in the use of pictures.

One national newspaper stands head & shoulders above its rivals. This newspaper shows that you can have a newspaper site with powerful images, and plenty of them, too. That site is TheSun.co.uk.

Judges were not only particularly impressed by the large image sizes, but the surprising depth to the site, offering not just the usual tabloid news & gossip but in depth Special Reports laden with pictures, such as the their current Falklands and Blair features. We understand that the Sun had extensive discussions on whether they could create a site with large numbers of bold images, and were delighted that they managed to launch their vision. The Getty Images’ Award recognises their efforts accordingly.

Their Award was collected by the Sun Online’s editor, Pete Picton and their website designer Paul Mortimore.

Although being a local weekly newspaper, the Newbury Weekly News' website, NewburyToday.co.uk is remarkable website which many National and Regional Newspapers would do well to emulate.

Judges were particularly impressed by the volume of pictures on the site, highlighting and showcasing local events and people, along with daily news bulletins and video clips, all in a clear easy-to-use layout. Newburytoday has already been voted the Newspaper Society’s best weekly internet site, and we are sure that this latest award will not be their last.

Their Award was collected by Martin Robertshaw, Deputy Group Editor, and Website Manager.

Magazine of the Year

Not all news sources on the web have a newspaper stablemate – as the Getty Images News Website of the Year Award recognises. We reviewed all major news websites looking for the organisation which showed excellence in the use of pictures.

The winner of this award is for a site which covers not only national and international news but also at a regional level. The volume of pictures is massive, including a day in pictures each day, features, special reports, citizen journalism, archive news and much much more. The news section is just a section of their overall website, which is repeatedly named as the best website in the world and is a beacon of clarity and ease of use throughout. The News Website of the Year 2007 was awarded to BBC News.

The Award was collected by Phil Coomes, Picture Editor of the BBC News site, along with Assistant Picture Editor Emma Lynch.

The Getty Images Newspaper Magazine of the Year stands supreme in a field where many titles are little more than glorified mail order catalogues.

The Award was presented to the Sunday Herald Magazine. The Award was accepted by Jane Wright.

Judges once again commented on the excellence of this magazine.

Two awards were made for the Getty Images Newspaper of the Year – the first heads north of the border to the overstuffed trophy cabinet of the Sunday Herald, which also won this award last year.

Their Award was accepted by their editor, Richard Walker and Picture Editor Elaine Livingstone.

Changing page formats can create particular problems for picture use. Our second Getty Images Newspaper of the Year has downsized, but still manages to use pictures with stunning effect – and was awarded to The Guardian.

The Award was accepted by Guardian Editor Alan Rusbridger and the title’s Picture Editor Roger Tooth.
